SMART Map project aims to implement RRI (Responsible Research and Innovation) in the EU industrial innovation process. It will reach the objective by co-producing and co-designing RRI roadmaps together with a wide range of industrial and societal actors. The roadmaps will benefit from the ResAgora framework that will be tailored for industrial needs, but will also take into account other available RRI frameworks and existing experiences (i.e. CSR) coming from industrial and entrepreneurial players as well as civil society organizations and other actors (research institutions, social innovators, media, society at large) through a structured path revolving around ad hoc dialogue events (Industrial Dialogues) throughout Europe.
SMART Map project will focus on three key time-changing research and innovation topics: precision medicine, synthetic biology and 3D printing in the medical sector. Each topic will be exploited in two paired geographic clusters to cover all the industrial specificities of EU countries (i.e. SynBio UK-Hungary). Each SMART Map will be composed by a general framework but to be applied flexibly to different economical/geographical areas, according to specific contexts.
Furthermore, the 3 topics will be explored and analyzed from an RRI industrial perspective separately as well as a in their cross-cutting and interdisciplinary aspects, since a convergence and a strong fertilization can be envisaged among them.
Each SMART Map will embed the 8 RRI themes indicated by EU Commission (open access/science, public engagement, ethics, gender, governance, science education, sustainability, inclusion/social justice). A specific board (SMART MAP angels) will ensure that the 8 themes will be part of the SMART MAPs. Further specific features will be also taken into consideration.
Another strategic board, made up by civil society representatives (SOCIETAL WATCHDOG), coordinated by a CSO partner of the project, will guarantee a continuous and strong interaction and collaboration between industry and society at large along the entire course of the project.
The Role of CEU-CELAB is to involve CEE stakeholders in the debates, to be co-leader of WP3 (with Manchester Metropolitan University Business School) on Synthetic Biology, CEU principal investigator, Enikő Demény will coordinate the work of Expert Advisory Board of the project (SMART MAP angels) and will be responsible with the Ethics themes.
The project’s kick off meeting took place on 15-16 June, 2016, at Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark. The next meeting will be the Expert Advisory Board Meeting and Executive Board meeting that will be organized by CEU-CELAB at CEU, Budapest, on 13-14 October, 2016.
